History of Hippotherapy

Hippocrates was the first person who wrote a chapter on horse riding as a means of natural exercise in 460-377BC.  In 1569 Merkurialis in Italy wrote a book on using horse in gymnastics.  In 1780 Tissot wrote a similar book on horse riding in gymnastics.

In 1952 Liz Hartel told the world that horse riding has helped her to overcome her polio and won the Silver Medal in the Olympic in Helsinki
The word hippotherapy was first used in Europe in 1960s where countries like Switzerland,  Austria and Germany began to use horses  as part of physical treatment for  army personels who were injured during the wars and physically handicapped children.

In 1960s therapeutic riding schools in Europe, North America and Canada were started.
In 1970s the physic al therapists in the United States began to develop horse movements and walks  as a mean of physical treatment.  In 1980s development of proper curricula on hippotherapy was created by The American Hippotherapy Association.

Hippotherapy is not the same as Therapeutic Riding and will be explained in due course.
