Hippocrates was the first
person who wrote a chapter on horse riding as a means of natural exercise in
460-377BC. In 1569 Merkurialis in Italy
wrote a book on using horse in gymnastics.
In 1780 Tissot wrote a similar book on horse riding in gymnastics.
In 1952 Liz Hartel
told the world that horse riding has helped her to overcome her polio and won
the Silver Medal in the Olympic in Helsinki
The word hippotherapy
was first used in Europe in 1960s where countries like Switzerland, Austria and Germany began to use horses as part of physical treatment for army personels who were injured during the
wars and physically handicapped children.
In 1960s therapeutic
riding schools in Europe, North America and Canada were started.
In 1970s the physic al
therapists in the United States began to develop horse movements and walks as a mean of physical treatment. In 1980s development of proper curricula on
hippotherapy was created by The American Hippotherapy Association.
Hippotherapy is not
the same as Therapeutic Riding and will be explained in due course.
